HEREAFTER

This is the new Clint Eastwood movie - with some of my artwork in it... check it out:

Within their selection of art from Hang Gallery, Warner Bros. had three or four of mine when they were filming in San Francisco earlier this year. I don't know if or when they show up in the actual movie and it was pure luck that City Sky #21 is so visible in the trailer.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 5, 2010

SAN FRANCISCO, CA

Presented by HANG ART Gallery, Genius Loci is an exhibition by artist Katja Leibenath. This solo show marks Leibenath’s first at HANG ART. Referring to the endemic spirit of a location, this shows concept is inspired by the China Basin neighborhood of San Francisco. Her richly colored oil paintings are multi-layered, echoing the timelessness of this rarely explored area.

Leibenath begins her paintings on location, drafting and sketching scenes that inspire her. Once relocated to her studio, she draws upon her memory and spontaneous intuition to complete the works. Leibenath’s direct visual recollection coupled with her experiential memory shapes each painting. Her educational background in Architecture is evident within each composition, which is based on the theory of form and line. It is her familiarity with the area of origin that builds each canvas surface, and her imagination and reminiscence that complete the thoughtful intent. From the saturated and vivid under-paint to the finishing details and drips, each painting allows the audience to create experiences of their own.

Originally from Düsseldorf Germany, Leibenath has been painting in San Francisco since 2006. Her work has been showcased at numerous venues, including SomArts Gallery, Mina Dresden Gallery, The Lab, Liquid Spaces, Huff Harrington Gallery (Atlanta, GA), and Nahcotta West Gallery (Los Angeles).

HANG ART is located at 567 Sutter Street, between Mason and Powell Streets. Gallery hours are Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm. For further information or high-resolution images, please call 415-434-4264.

Done!

The paintings for the show are all done and drying at the studio. It was a lot of work but now it's done and I am very happy.

So now... I will be taking off for a little while.
When I get back I hope to see everyone at the Opening!

sneak peek of new work...

The September show is coming together. It has a very cool title, I finish paintings daily and marketing will start shortly.
I've been working on most of the about 20 pieces since May, indoors and outdoors, sometimes at the dry docks in the dogpatch, around China Basin/ the Ramp.
The sizes now range from 30x 30 to 36x48, thanks to some of you for convincing me to work bigger... I love it.

Working in my studio every day now, would like to be done in a couple weeks so they can dry properly. Experimenting with textures and colors, can't wait to see them all together at the gallery!

summer solstice

I am visiting the Dogpatch regularly as I am getting ready for the big show in September. This was by far the most spectacular night.
